A Bird in the Hand...
...is a better portion size than the two in the bush.
Scales, measuring cups, measuring spoons, containers, and Ziploc bags are all great ways to correctly mete out the right portion sizes. It's tedious, but if you prepare multiple meals at a time and portion them out, it's not painful. What do you do, though, when you go to a restaurant? Or don't have the money to buy the scales, measuring cups, et al? It's easy... use the tool you carry around with you everywhere... your hand!
Another portion tip? Get rid of your big plates. Serve your dinner on 6-8" plates and not only will you trick your mind into thinking you've eaten more, you won't be able to pile as much on your plate. And if you eat slowly, taking 15-20 minutes to finish your plate of food, you give your stomach a chance to register it's full before you have a chance to go back for seconds.
